Diamond: the diamond is the hardest mineral on earth, its name derives from the Greek word adamas, meaning invincible. This stone was already used in jewelry by Eastern countries 5000 years ago, while in the West (like in Rome and Greece), although known and respected, was not understood as it should have been, since they did not know how to handle it. The first person able to correctly and appropriately describe the hardness of diamonds towards other minerals was the Austrian Friedrich Mohs (1773-1839) who introduced a hardness scale, rating the hardness of minerals 1 to 10, in which the diamond achieves the hardness of 10. For a proper assessment of diamonds, four international criteria must be met: Carat, the weight of precious stones; Clarity, providing diamonds internal quality, the highest level is called IF (Internally Flawless); Color, also representing an index of quality, the highest color grade is D (exceptional white); Cut, even though underestimated by many, it is essential because it has the greatest influence on a diamond’s sparkle and it must be well proportioned.
Famous diamonds: 1) KOH-NOOR (mountain of light) mentioned in 1304 weighed 186 carats. 2) CULINAN is the largest diamond ever found, weighed 3106 carats,it was split into 9 major stones and 96 smaller. 3) EXCELSIOR the second largest diamond ever found, weighed 995,2 carats.
Carat is the standard unit of weight measurement for diamonds and other gemstones. One carat equals one fifth of gram. The word Carat comes from the Greek "Karation", carob seeds, which have been used throughout history to measure jewelry, because it was believed that there was little variance in their mass distribution.
Fineness represents the purity of precious metals expressed in parts per thousand. Fineness used in Italy is 750/1000, which means, 750 parts out of 1000 are pure gold and the remaining 250 other noble metals that the goldsmith mixture according to his needs. The introduction of fineness measurement in thousandth is quite recent. It is an extension of the older karat system of denoting the purity of gold by fractions of 24, such as "18 karat" for an alloy with 75% (18 parts per 24) pure gold by mass.
Pearls are synonymous with perfection, purity and emotions. They are represented and enhanced throughout the world with ancient legends. In ancient times considered manifestation of Venus, nowadays pearls are almost entirely the result of processed crops in Australia, Polynesia and Japan. Australian pearls grow along North Western Australia coasts inside a oyster called Pinctada Maxima; The Thaitian pearls are formed from the Pinctada Margaritifera Cumingi oyster and range from pale gray to black color; The Japanese pearls (Akoya) are formed from the Pinctada Martensii oyster and have a pale white color. To completely assess every single feature of a pearl it requires a lot of experience or rely on experts with proven credentials. International evaluation characteristics are: SHAPE, which must be spherical, SIZE, obviously the larger the pearl the more appreciated, COLOR, ranging from white to pale white with pink shades and from pale gray to black, SURFACE, which must be smooth, polished and free of defects, ORIENT, which defines the iridescent, shimmering play-of-colour, compared by the romantics to the moon's one, magical and mysterious.
