Before the 1950s, the diamond trade operated under conditions of regulatory uncertainty. Professionals used heterogeneous and often subjective classification systems: some resorted to the letters A, B, and C, while others preferred Roman numerals or vague terms lacking scientific definitions, such as "fine white" or "blue white." This fragmentation made evaluations inconsistent and open to arbitrary interpretations.

The GIA revolution: a new beginning

With the introduction of the "4Cs," the GIA aimed to establish a universal and impartial language. To mark a clear distinction from previous systems—considered imprecise and obsolete—it was decided to reset past references. The choice to start the color scale with the letter D was a strategic decision to symbolize a new starting point, free from any possible association with old grading methods.

From D to Z: clarity and consistency

On the GIA scale, the letter D represents the total absence of color, the highest grade of color purity. The scale continues to Z as the presence of yellow, brown, or gray tints becomes more perceptible. Today, this standard is recognized globally, ensuring that every stone, whether it is a small brilliant or a diamond of several ct., is evaluated with the same objectivity.
